:: Haibane Renmei ::
Reviewed By: perosquared

"Haibane Renmei" (translated as "The Charcoal Feathers Federation"), is the story of a world where humans live alongside the Haibane, two communities of people who are taken from their former lives (whether children or adults) and 'reborn' inside of giant cocoons while they dream and forget about their previous existence. Oh, and they grow gray-feathered wings. And get halos. ^_^;

"Haibane Renmei" focuses on Rakka ("falling", named in the Haibane tradition after the content of her cocoon dream), a teenage girl who is a newly-born Haibane. The story is not terribly eventful (so far; I've only watched the first 7 episodes of the 13), focusing mostly on the Haibane's day-to-day existence. The human residents of the walled city of the story are somewhat prejudiced against the Haibane, who are protected by the "Charcoal Feather Federation", responsible for looking after the Haibane.

To say too much about the story would be to ruin the series, since most of the story is focused on character interactions and Rakka's search for a job within the city. Needless to say, this series creates a magnificent new world with all sorts of interesting characters and angles to explore, regardless of whether it ever moves on to more "epic" proportions or not. Highly recommended.
