From start to finish the audience is embraced in an exciting and jazzy discourse through the galaxy on the bounty hunters' ship Bebop. Since, Exeunter provided a great review and gave a synopsis of the series, I will instead provide a review on the more objective points of the anime itself.
The animation was very well done, however it isn't anything original. The characters are drawn much like every other serious anime series' and the space ships, backgrounds and settings are reminiscent of Macross.
The Character's of Cowboy Bebop are absolutely the most enjoyable and eclectic mix of personalities ever to be brought together in a series! I believe it is the characters that makes this series so fun to watch. However, the development of their pasts are never really thorough enough to give you the feeling of who they really are. (Especially in the case of Spike.) However, I believe this is what makes this series so intriguing. It's as if you are with the characters and interacting with them in the present. Just as if you met a person and befriended them, you would learn things about their past as you get to know them, but yet their past is theirs and theirs alone. Their will be things that one will never know about their friends, and vice versa. I believe this rhetorical technique of establishing a mysterious character Ethos gives this series an edge over other animes that go too indepth of the characters. (Although I usually like animes with in depth character developments. =D ). Although we never truly know everything about Spike, Jet, Faye, Vicious and Julia, I take it as I expect the author would want me to view it; as a real life experience with strangers on a ship called Bebop.
The story is for the most part enjoyable. Each episode has it's on plot, however there is an underlying story through all of the series and that is the story of Spike and Julia. I believe that this is the only category in which the series sells itself short. The story never really clarifies the origins of Spike, Jula and Vicious in detail, and the ending is very abrupt. But then again, from a writer's standpoint, it's a great rhetorical technique that captures the audiences attention to the very end.
THE MUSIC IN THIS SERIES IS ABSOLUTELY THE BEST OST EVER PUT TOGETHER. YOKO KANNO IS A MUSICAL GENIUS!
(ahem* seriously, the music is what sets this anime apart from others).
This series has it all, laughs, tears, fears and anger. It has been to my experience the most enjoyable series to watch from beginning to end. Put together a list of the greatest anime series, and I guarantee that Cowboy Bebop will be in the Top 5.
