:: Elfen Lied ::
Reviewed By: kafkar

Genres:

Action, Ecchi, Horror, Mature, Romance, Science Fiction

Synopsis:

The diclonius (two-horned human) is a "mutant" which is created by humans. They are very powerful beings who have special abilities, at first it seems like a form of telekinesis, but you will later learn more about it.

Anyways, these diclonius are being held captive in a research center. The story begins when one of them named Lucy breaks free of her confinement and goes on a murderous rampage.

General:

You're probably thinking to yourself...

"Action, ecchi, Horror, Mature, Romance, Science Fiction... WTF?!"

Well let me tell you that this anime has them all... The Mature rating is in reference to extreme graphical violence as well as nudity.

Within the first minute of watching this anime I was shocked. I hadn't read any reviews about it or anything, someone had just told me that I had to see it. The strange thing is, I loved it. I'm pretty desensitized against this sort of thing, but I don't think it will bother most people :)

Anyways, this anime spans many genres and handles them all very well. It really is a masterpiece.

Story/Plot:

This anime isn't just sensless violence and nudity, it actually has a story!

The series does a very good job of fitting in a lot of story into its short 14 episodes. It also does a great job of showing the various backstories of the characters which are required to understand the current state of affairs.

Characters:

The characters are one of the defining points of this anime. They are very unique and you feel very inclined to care about them. I find this to be very important, because in many animes I could give a damn if some character is killed off. However, this is one of those animes in which you build up feelings towards these characters, and you feel sad when they are killed or injured (and there is a lot of that going around).

Animation/Graphics:

Superb. The animation is VERY well done. This anime is about as gruesome as they come, so you will be seeing things like bones, intestines, you name it, you'll see it. Its very graphic and violent, and the animation is so good that you can only sit in awe of what you are witnessing.

Music:

I really liked the song from the music box, it fits perfectly with the feel of the anime.

Sound Effects:

The sounds are perfect. The sound of limbs being ripped off and wood cracking all sound very realistic (don't ask how I know the sound of limbs being severed). Anyways, turn up the volume for this one, it is truely amazing.

Voice Acting:

The voice acting was done quite well. I especially liked Nyuu/Lucy's voice, as well as nana's.

Enjoyment:

What can I say, this is one of my favorite animes of all time. Its one of those that I watched all in one sitting. I enjoyed every minute of this anime.

Pluses and Minuses:

+Action, Ecchi, Horror, Mature, Romance, Science Fiction, this anime has it all!
+Extreme graphic violence and nudity, gotta love it.
+Well developed plot and characters which tap into your feelings.
-Might be too violent for some viewers?
